Dr. David Bathgate

In addition to a 20-year career as a professional documentary photographer and photojournalist, David Bathgate is a Ph.D anthropologist. His work has appeared in numerous international newspapers and magazines, and is a full-time contributor to both Getty Images in London, and Redux Pictures in New York.

In 2002 David volunteered to train a select group of young Afghan men and women at AINA (“Mirror”) in Kabul to become photojournalists, and a “visual voice” for their country. The effort was a success, and David returned the following year to further this group’s education in the field.

Since then, David has travelled to Afghanistan to instruct several additional workshops aimed at increasing youth interest and practical experience as photojournalists. One such latter workshop was hosted by the U.S. Embassy in Kabul, and contributed greatly to advancing Afghan students of photojournalism in their careers.

When not teaching in Afghanistan, David embedded on 13 occasions with the U.S. Army, Marine Corps, and Canadian army forces, providing visual coverage of that war for numerous international magazines, newspapers and online news platforms.
